      Dear,

I have a question related to Ansys ACP, What is the need to define stack up and sub-laminate in ACP pre-post, is it related to meso and micro modeling of the composite plate.

And what is the actual purpose of sub-laminate and stack-up when already we define ply as modeling of ply and fabric in a fabric domain?

Thank you in advance for any kind of clarification.

      Regards

      Hello SandeepMedikonda and tsiriaks sir,

      Please check this question too.

      Thank you!

      Hi,

With stack-up we can predefine a layup pattern and apply it to laminate. It makes the ply modeling process easier and faster. Moreover, in stack-up window, one can study the thickness properties and Polar properties in the stackup window analysis tab.

Defining sub-laminate enables us to define solid elements based on different extrusion method, like "analysis ply wise, production ply wise, modeling ply wise". That's what I think of and maybe others have better suggestions.

      Ok thank you, Dear,

but already as we define ply as modeling of ply and fabric in a fabric domain, Then too is it needed.

      Thank you

I am sorry I don't quite understand the question.

      Dear,

When we use Ansys ACP pre-post, In Acp we define fabric then we define stack up followed by sub-laminate, then after rosette and orientation set we define modeling of ply group.

Now the question is what is the need to define stack up and sub-laminate. If we define fabric and modeling of ply group that can also cover the material thickness and no of ply.

Is it related to meso and micro modeling of the composite plate?

      Thanking you

      Hi,

You are definitely correct that using fabric and ply group alone can serve the purpose of creating material thickness and No. of ply.

My understanding is stack up just provides a different approach to create plies.

For Micro modeling of the composite plate, we have Material Designer to serve the purpose.

      Dear,

Ok, so what approach is provided by stack up and sub-laminate like what purpose they full fill.

      Hi viv123,

After stackup is created, it can be used as a "ply material" to create a modeling ply. This saves the time and effort of creating production plies layer by layer (see figure 1 below).

Another thing that makes me prefer stackup is that we can do an analysis of the stackup properties, like polar properties. (see figure 2 below)

      Dear,

Ok Regarding the first point modeling ply we can also define by fabric.

What is the importance of your second point like polar properties?

      Thanking you

      Hi Viv123,

Yes, stackup just offers the possibility to create modeling ply from a different approach and it is totally a personal preference which method you choose.

For analysis properties of stackup, it helps a user to get a quick glimpse of the stackup properties like layer angle and thickness. The polar properties can tell how uniform the stiffness distribution is in different angles, which may be of interest in some designs. Again, I am not saying this is necessary for your design, it just provides a possibility and whether using it or not is totally a personal preference.

      Hello Mr, Wenlog,

Can you please let me know what are the units in the stackup properties window where we can find the laminate engineering constants??
I don't seem to be able to find it in the literature/ansys help .

      Best Regards,

      Hi Achilleas,

In ACP(Pre), you can define the units, and the number in the stackup properties should following the ACP(Pre) units.

      Regards,

      Wenlong
