SubscriberHi,
Â
I'm in the process of upgrading our dedicated simulation hardware and my laptop to run Ansys Discovery and Mechanical. We're new discovery users.
1) Have you had a chance to test the new Nvidia Ampere based GPUs yet?
2) How does the amount of GPU memory affect the Discovery Explore mode? Does less RAM limit the size of the model or just the refinement of the mesh?
3) Do you have a rule of thumb as to number of nodes or DOF vs GPU RAM?
Â
Thanks

Forum ModeratorHello Craig Turner To answer your queries:- Discovery currently supports only the Kepler, Maxwell, Pascal, or Turing architecture. For more information on hardware recommendations, please check out the following pages: Ansys Discovery Hardware requirements. List of known Discovery/ Discovery Live friendly graphics cards.
- Â More GPU memory improves Discovery Explore mode in terms of performance and fidelity of solution. Less RAM limits both size of model and fidelity. To improve fidelity one can reduce model size when the RAM is limited. For more clear understanding, I would recommend going through the below page. Discovery Live: "Thin" geometric features and relative GPU adjustments You can also check out discussions from other users on Graphics performance by searching through the Forum. Example.
- There is no specific metric for nodes/dof and GPU RAM.

Also, regarding Ampere-based GPU, I just checked with my team, it has been tested for the next upcoming version (2021 R2) and it should work starting 2021 R2.
