Adding new material in ANSYS Discovery

I would like to do a strucutal analysis of a machine that has electrical steel laminations. As the default material list does not have electrical steel, I would like to add a new material. However, it seems like you need to be in the "Explore" workspace to add/edit materials. I am getting an error saying that "Explore is not available due to an incompatible graphics device or an out of date graphics driver". Looking at the hardware requirements, it seems that a discrete graphics card is required, which I do not have.

Is there any way to add materials without accesing the "Explore" workspace? Or is there a way to access the explore workspace without a discrete graphics card?

      Thank you!

      Hello Salek,

You can assign new material in Discovery Model model as well. You do not need to be in Explore mode to add/edit materials.

Discovery by default assigns Structural steel to your geometry. You can add/edit material by triple clicking the object or by selecting the object direclty from the model tree.

For Explore mode to work, you need minimum 4GB dedicated GPU RAM, while 8GB GPU is recommended. Please refer Ansys Discovery Hardware Requirements (2022 R2) - Ansys Knowledge for more information.

Thank you for your reply. However, when I triple click or select the object from the model tree it does not give me any options to change the material. I just get a box where I can select a material and the only option is structrual steel.

How can you define a new material without using the explore workspace?

      Thank you.

      Hello Salek,

Please make sure you have ''Standard Discovery library'' option activated (it should be highlighted in blue colour).

You can check this from Settings >Physics >Material Defaults

      Thank you.

Yes I have the Standard Discovery Library enabled, I still can not add or edit materials.

      Hello Salek,

Can you please check if you are able to add/edit materials for any sample models available in Disocvery?

Please refer this video article on Changing Default Materials in Ansys Discovery

      Thanks & Regards,

      Devendra
