The numerical modeling of electric motors has its basics in the electromagnetic fields theory. There are several mathematical approaches such as finite-element method (FEM), finite-difference method (FDM), boundary element method (BEM) to solving the system equations in numerical methods.

Moreover, one can choose between the below solvers:

  • Transient - used by default. This solves the full transient solution allowing losses to be calculated.
  • Multi-static No Losses - performs a series of multi-static calculations. Stator iron losses are estimated based on maximum flux density values.
  • Multi-static With Losses (Beta) - performs a series of multi-static calculations, where eddy current losses are determined in post-processing by differentiating the magnetic vector potential (with respect to time) to obtain the electric field. This is valid if there is minimal eddy current decay, such that there would be negligible opposition to the primary magnetic field from the missing induced eddy currents: as a heuristic, the conductive region thickness and frequency of the applied field should be small enough such that skin depth > region thickness.
