The DRGEP method is more aggressive than DRG, and removes more species from step to step, so it is more likely to fail because the difference between iterative solutions is higher.
Mechanism reduction has a higher chance of failing if there are too many targets, or they are too aggressive. I would suggest examing your targets and see if any are testing for the same thing in different ways. For really stiff chemistry mechanisms, you may only be able to use DRG. This can still do a decent job of reducing the mechanism if reduction is possible.
