That's for high volume fraction or particle source term and not material density: just checking!  

They add in some extra solver numerics that simplify the gradient maths and spread the particle source around. Both will improve solver stability, but may introduce slight inaccuracies to the solution. Both are covered in the User's Guide or Theory Manual.
