For the method of using springs instead of wires, I sliced off a piece of the body and colored it purple to act as a "roller". I will put a revolute joint between that cylinder and the adjacent part of the link. The springs will model the straight part of the wire. This allows the springs on each side of the roller to have the same tension.  For the method of using wires, slicing off a piece is not necessary as the wire would slide on the surface of the boss in the link.
