In SpaceClaim, on the Workbench tab, Unshare All.

Make a Component called Strings and move all the lines representing strings/beams into that component. Do not put any solid bodies in that component. Open that Component in its own window, use the Share button on the Strings.

In this way, only the strings will share topology and should remain connected in Mechanical. They will not be connected to any solid body.
