How to change the beam type in LS-DYNA to Timoshenko beam

      Hello all,

I have built a tower in LS-DYNA. The default beam type in LS-DYNA is Hughes-Liu beams. But, I want to use the Timoshenko beam instead. From the LS-DYNA manual, one can use *SECTION_BEAM, type 13 to use the Timoshenko beam. I tried but failed.

The attached figure is my command line and the tower.

Hi Xiao, nyour input is incomplete. You need to include a second line under *SECTION_BEAM to define the beam cross section. See Card 2c in the keyword manual for *SECTION_BEAM. Test the beam element in a simple model before you move to the bigger model. Beam type 13 is a small displacement, linear elastic Timoshenko beam. Another alternative is the more general beam type 2, which is a corotational beam element (can handle large rigid body rotations) and uses the same stiffness matrix as beam type 13 in the element basic coordinate system. All beam formulations are supported in implicit analysis as well.nRegards, nakn

Hello Akoutras,nSorry to reply to your answer so late. I followed your suggestion by changing the elform to 2. I first want to try the code works or not by changing only 1 element. But the solver reported that: Total of 1 multiply defined IDs for SECTION. Also, I search the internet to find how to get the section ID in LS-DYNA. But there are no materials. Can you give some suggestions? nInput: n*SECTION_BEAMn1,2,0.833n0.1524,130127,0.1016,0.0127nError:n Beginning of keyword reader 02/05/21 13:30:34nn *** Error 10139 (KEY+139)n Total of 1 multiply defined IDs for SECTIONn (Check d3hsp for detail)nn *** Error 10133 (KEY+133)n input data failed with: 1 errorsnnBest,nXiaon

This question is more for the explicit forum, where you might be able to get some more help. I would close this one and start a new thread there.nn
