August 23, 2020 at 1:05 amehsan120SubscriberHi,Is there any way that I can select a surface made by the surface coating option in the name selection? I need it because I have to apply an initial stress field on this shell surface, however, it seems I cannot select this surface as a separate body in the name selection. nIf this is not possible, what would be the difference if I make a surface body in the CAD on my solid part and solve this? Is it very different from the surface coating option especially if I use sharedtopology feature to avoid the bonded contact between the shell and solid parts?.Thanksn

August 24, 2020 at 6:48 pmehsan120SubscriberThanks for the response. However, there is no description in the link you sent that show how I can select the coated surface as a body so I can use it in the command APDL for introducing initial stress and strain. nHow about the second part of my question, is there any difference?.Thanksn

It puts a shell element on the face of the solid geometry that has solid elements and allows you to assign material and thickness to the shell elements. It sets the shell offset appropriately. You can do all this manually. The shell elements use the same nodes that are on the solid elements, which is like shared topology.n

August 25, 2020 at 12:03 amehsan120SubscriberThanks for the response .nOne more question. For the initial stress in the shell layer I am using the following command in the APDL:ncmsell, shellpartninistate,define,,,,,10,10,10ncmsell,allnnBut I cannot understand why the stress in the z direction is not applied? Do I need to change something?.Thanksn

Hello, if you’re not seeing the stress being applied in the z-direction, there might be a few things to consider:
Â
- Element Orientation: Check the orientation of your shell elements. The default coordinate system for shell elements in ANSYS is the Global Cartesian Coordinate System (X, Y, Z). Ensure that the element normals are aligned with the global Z-direction. If not, you may need to reorient or rotate the elements accordingly.
- Units: Verify that the units you’re using for defining the initial stress are consistent with the units of your analysis. Make sure the units match for stress (e.g., Pa, psi) and thickness (e.g., meters, inches) to ensure proper scaling.
- Verify Input Syntax: Double-check the syntax of the ncmsell command to ensure that you are using it correctly. Ensure that you are specifying the appropriate values for the stress components and the thickness. The command syntax should be ncmsell, shellpart, ninistate, define, stress_x, stress_y, stress_z, thickness.
- Verify Results: After running the analysis, make sure to check the results to verify if the stress in the z-direction is indeed not being applied or if it is not being displayed correctly in the post-processing phase. Review the stress results in the ANSYS Mechanical or other relevant post-processing tools to ensure that the correct stress components are being computed and displayed.

Hello there,
I want to simulate the polymer flow in a continuous wire coating process. In the process, a wire with a diameter of "d" enters the liquid polymer contaier (die cavity) with a constant speed of "U". After leaving the die, how can get the thickness of coating ?. Please any comment or recommndations for naming the proper softaware will be very helpful. Thanks in advance
