A constitutive equation is the mathematical description of how materials respond to various loadings. Constitutive equations describe the relation between stress and strain. They are determined through experimental observations.

While using numerical methods such as Finite Element Analysis, constitutive equations are input that we need to define. It is not one of the output variables of numerical methods and hence cannot be derived numerically.
