What is the Von-Mises Yield Criteria?

It predicts when a material in an abitrary 3D stress state will yield. It first calculates the Von-Mises stress, then compare to the yield stress. If V-M is larger, then yield happens.

Hi all! To add to the above answer, the von Mises yield criterion is based on distortion energy theory of yielding.

Hi all, a very important feature of it is, Von-Mises Yield Criteria assumes that only strain energy that generates angular distortion will produce yielding.
