We have an exciting announcement about badges coming in May 2025. Until then, we will temporarily stop issuing new badges for course completions and certifications. However, all completions will be recorded and fulfilled after May 2025.

Can orthotropic material be applied to beam elements in ANSYS Mechanical?

Yes, beam elements can have orthotropic elastic material. However, beam theory leads to a reduced stress/strain tensor and some orthotropic material properties are actually neglected. For more details, go to following page on ANSYS/Help to check beam element definition.; help/anselem/HlpE_BEAM188.html For Beam188 (Beam189 for higher order beam), the Material Properties listed include Ex, Gxy, and Gxz (x is along the beam length). Therefore, given orthotropic material, Ey and Ez are not actually used in the beam element and not even Gyz. However, the Shear moduli Gxy, and Gxz can be different.
