Core Loss in ANSYS MAXWELL Eddy Current solution

      Hi everyone,

I have a question about core loss in the Eddy Current solver. One can activate the "core loss model" in the excitation menu (Excitation> set core loss). In the material definition, if "Electrical steel" is selected for the Core loss model, one can define kh, hc, ke as loss coefficients. However, there is also a parameter "Magnetic loss tangent", that can be defined for loss calculation. Which one should we use in case of a laminated motor core?

My second question is that, if I don't define any of these loss coefficients for the core material (not any of the loss tangent, kh, kc, ke), but activate the eddy effect for the material (Excitation> set eddy effects), does the solver calculate the ohmic loss due to the induced eddy current in the core? If yes, why is there a need to define the eddy current loss coefficient (it is ke, I think)?

Thank you in advance for your time and support.

      Hi,

      1. The magnetic loss tangent is primarily used for linear materials operating at high frequencies. When designing an electrical machine, core loss/electrical steel properties, and lamination specifications are typically considered.

      2. If you only activate the eddy current effect, then ohmic losses are computed. Since core loss includes eddy current effects, you should not enable the eddy current effect when core loss is activated.

      I hope this helps you
