vorticity-stream function

  can anyone explain me why vorticity-stream function is incorporated in CFD?
  
  What is the point of using it?
  
  apart from mathematical derivations I would like to know what it signifies when used in CFD:?

  The significance would mainly be that the pressure term in the governing equations can be dropped as a dependent variable and instead of solving the three PDE's as governing equations, it will be reduced to 2.
