Hi all,
I recently designed a simple magnifier with an intermediate pupil. The pupil position is highlighted in yellow and it was set manually. See the thickness of 19.5mm in surface 3, the lens surface just before the pupil:
Now changing the solve on this thickness to "U" for pupil position:
I tried all sorts. Even putting another dummy surface in, the new surface thickness with pupil distance remains zero:
I just always get zero for the thickness when I try a pupil solve. Is this a Zemax error or did I overlook anything? I work with 2024R1.03 and had the same issue with 2024R1.00.

Hi Jurgen,
The Pupil Position Thickness Solve can be used to locate the Exit Pupil position using real, differential rays rather than paraxial rays. Since the exit pupil is calculated as the image of the aperture stop in image space, it doesn't make much sense to use this solve before the stop (And that's why the solve there is not doing anything).
You can have a look at the article “Display pupils on a layout plot – Knowledgebase”. Though I don’t think the content in the article applies specifically to the analysis you’re trying to do, it does at least demonstrate the quantities that OpticStudio reports as the Entrance and Exit Pupil and how those are determined within the software.
Best,

Hi Berta,
thank you for this. I tried to find the pupil from after the pupil surface using dummies, and it does not work either.
Also I tried the chief ray height=0 solve, and it also does not work. I had a quick read through the knowledge base article, but as I do not do ZPL it does not help me really. So the solves "pupil position" and "chief ray height =0" do not work, albeit I have seen them working before. There is also no warning that they cannot be applied (as in "marginal ray height", where it tells me the solve cannot be used in this situation), so I wonder what the purpose of those solves are when they cannot be used?
Cheers,
Jurgen
