Unable to get convergence for gasket compression problem

I was trying to simulate a simplified gasket compression problem in order to get the distribution of stress along the gasket to assess its sealing function. For accomplishing the same, I applied rubber to the gasket(top) and steel to the casing(bottom) shown in the figure below and frictional contact was defined between both the parts with interference treatment set to Adjust to Touch. The initial contact results gave the contact as closed.

Displacement boundary condition was given to the gasket top face so that it is slighly compressed after settling in the groove (10% of its edge length) and the lower and side faces of the casing were given fixed support boundary condition. The no. of substeps were kept sufficiently large(>250 in total) and since rubber has hyperelastic material property, large deformation was turned on and appropriate commands were given for reduced integration and mixed u-p formulation.

The problem diverges at the time step when the gasket is compressed after settling in. The error that is shown states that the problem failed to converge for the nonlinear problem. Not sure whether the problem is in the mesh, refining which would cause increase the already lengthy solution times. Any suggestions for resolving the same are welcome...

      Hi

      Very common question.

      Hi Erik,

Thanks for your reply. Can you comment on the mesh for the problem, like whether it is suitable for the problem??
