LS-DYNA or Static Structural

      Hallo everyone,

I would like to see the strain condition and the stress distribution of the gasket after the green steel plate squeezes the blue gasket by 1mm as shown in the picture. I would like to ask which software I should use, Static Structural or LS-Dyna, at the moment I just want to use the Displacement function for the displacement of the rigid plate. The steel plate doesn't need to set any acceleration, just want to set the condition of squeezing the gasket by 1mm, and then the gasket is fixed inside another steel plate. Thanks in advance!

      Hi Yira,

You can use Static Structural for the Gasket analysis.

The pressure-displacement curve of a gasket often starts with a low stiffness, making solver’s guess quite far from the final solution, and causing a number of iterations. But for gaskets, often a good approximation to the final displacement solution is known. So a few tricks may work to accelerate convergence by allowing the solver to start from a good first guess, or by forcing the analysis to follow certain displacement constraints during the iteration.

Check the below link for the guidelines in case you face convergence isues.

        Hi Avnishm,

I'm totally new to ansys, so what I'm asking is if I want to see a 1mm squeeze effect of the steel plate on the gasket, is it possible to move the plate to squeeze just by applying a 1mm displacement to the right on the left side of the plate, rather than applying a force to the plate? Thanks in advance!

      Hi Yiran,

Yes, you can do so by applying a displacement boundary condition of 1mm instead of force to achieve the same on Static Structural.

Ensure to apply the displacement very slowly by considering higher number of subtseps in the analysis settings.

I mentioned about convergence issues in advance for your preparation in case you face it.
