Normal VS equivalent strain in composite

      Hello,

I am conducting a compression test simulation on a composite in plane strain with isotropic elasticity and bonded interfaces (please see image below). I designed the model in a very simple format since I'm not allowed to share the model itself. I impose the following boundary conditions. 1: fixed corner, 2 (top edge): displacement boundary condition (compressive) and 3 (bottom edge): fixed in X (horizontal), free in Y (vertical). The average normal strain in the top edge as calculated by Ansys is lower than the normal strain calculated by hand. Furthermore, the equivalent strain in the top edge is almost the same as the one calculated by hand.

      Could you please advise?

      Many thanks.

      Costas

      Hi,

Can you show the formula used for hand calculations and under which boundary conditions the formula is applicable?

      Regards,

      Ashish Khemka
