SubscriberDear reader,
I am working on a problem (plane stress 2D) where I try to measure the resultant force on a displacement boundary condition under the influence of thermal expansion. The picture shows half the model, the left vertcal edge is a frictionless support since the model is mirrored on that edge. On the right corners 2 springs are connected with shared topology to the rectangular block (for company reasons the rest of the springs are not shown) and each spring thus exerts 2 forces (Fx,Fy) and a torque on the block. This model is symmetric in vertical direction, so when I would apply a thermal load, the thermal expansion would be symmetric and I would expect the force on the displacement boundary A (that keeps y=0) to be zero. However, even using a tiny mesh size of 5um and force convergence of 1e-8N I can not get the force to converge to below 1e-8N, and switching to a force convergence value of 1e-9N does not change the results much (only about 1% change). Can anyone make a suggestion for me such that I can achieve a force of <1e-9N or better <1e-10N?Â

Are you using the µmks unit system?

SubscriberHi,
Thank you for your reply. I use the metric system. I assumed the unit system would not influence the accuracy of the model.
