How can we calculate the void and volume fraction in multi phase flows? It would be great if it were explained with an example.

To calcuate the void in your system assuming you are looking into a "reduced" quantity so you just volume integral the volume fraction to have the whole "void" in m³. Volume Fraction is nothing else than the spatial/temporal/ensemble average of the indicator function (which does only return 1 if phase is there or 0 if not) and so is a sort of probablity in terms of volume to find certain phase in a certain volume.
