Unsteady formulation for natural convection

I am trying to simulate Rayleigh-benard convection problem using Boussinesqs approximation, in a square cavity,

Top surface is cold, bottom is hot, side walls are adiabatic, using water as fluid.

In general it is said that natural convection problems are unsteady.

In some papers which i have referred the authors used steady formulation to solve the problem while in some papers the authors used transient formulation during simulation. SO i am confused, whether to use steady or transient formulation.

      Please help.

Yes, either can and do work. It depends what you're wanting to see.
