Intro to Materials Science

Materials surround us every day in the products we use. It’s important that, as engineers and designers, we have a fundamental understanding of materials so we can use them appropriately in our projects and products. But there are a lot of materials, and they can be quite different from one another — so where do we start? In this learning track titled Intro to Materials, we will look to cover some of that foundational knowledge. We start with Intro to Material Performance, as a material's performance is critical in design. We then move on to Introduction to Material Elasticity, a key property that influences material performance. Next, in Introduction to Material Structure, we will discuss how a material's structure impacts its properties, which in turn impacts performance. Our final course is Introduction to Material Properties, in which we will discuss various elements of processing techniques and how they are used to produce materials with the desired performance.

Intro to Material Performance

Materials are everywhere, from chairs and cups to computers and cars. Picking the right material for a product, or materials selection, is an important part of product design. We want our material to perform as expected throughout the product’s lifetime. But there...Read more

Intro to Material Elasticity

Material properties describe how a material reacts or behaves under specific conditions or stimuli. We as designers and engineers use these properties to understand how a material will behave in our final designed product. Our minds are often first drawn to how ...Read more

Intro to Material Structure

The word “structure” brings many images to mind, from buildings to playgrounds. But what does it mean in the context of materials? We care about our materials at all length scales, from the tallest buildings to how the atoms are arranged in nanoparticles. But why d...Read more

Intro to Material Processing

Material processing is an integral part of getting materials from the raw state in the ground to the products we use in our day-to-day lives. But we can’t just take an element, molecule, or compound from the ground and go straight to our water bottles or hip replaceme...Read more
