Large Strain Formulation — Lesson 2

We have seen how large deformation triggers physical changes in a system that in turn affect its mechanical response.

Some deformations may be small and visible only to the sharpest set of eyes.

Others may be too big to be ignored.

In other cases, the deformations are small, but the structure may still experience the strong influence of large deformations.

A better way of judging when to use the large deformation formulation can be made by learning the approximations one makes assuming a small deformation formulation. In this lesson, we will study the mathematical details of small versus large deformation formulations and learn what compromises we make when we assume a system to undergo small deformations.
