Formula SAE suspension uprights are used to connect the car to the wheels via the control arms and wheel hub. They transmit nearly all the experienced load of the racecar to the ground. Suspension uprights experience various loads that could lead to failure. By performing a structural analysis, students can get a better idea of the structural integrity of their design and make design changes accordingly.
The video demonstration goes over how to perform a structural analysis of a suspension upright. Part 1 shows the problem overview, the geometry simplification using Ansys SpaceClaim, and free body diagrams. Part 1 concludes by showing the Ansys Workbench project schematic setup and selecting a new material (aluminum) in the engineering data. Part 2 shows the geometry simplification and coordinate system creation for the remote force loads in Ansys Mechanical and goes over post-processing the results.
