Industry Application of MBSE/SysML — Lesson 4

This lesson provides an overview of Model-Based System Engineering (MBSE) through an industry example, focusing on the 30-meter Telescope Project (TMT). The TMT is a collaborative effort involving various nations, aiming to develop a ground-based telescope using segmented mirrors due to its immense size. The project faces challenges such as finalizing site location and cost reduction. The Jet Propulsion Lab (JPL) is responsible for designing major subsystems, employing an Executable Model-Based Systems Engineering Method (ESEM). The Alignment and Phasing System (APS) is crucial, ensuring the coherent operation of the segmented mirrors. The APS subsystem utilizes system modeling to manage requirements, behavior, and structural elements. The benefits of employing MBSE on the TMT project include an enhanced understanding of system behavior, early verification through analysis, validation of telescope-level requirements, and support for impact assessments.
