Implicit and Explicit Time Integration Methods — Lesson 2

Different events may occur over vastly different time scales. For example, it takes millions of years of erosion of rocks by forces of nature to create a beautiful and unique landscape such as the one shown below.

 

On the other hand, a car may crash and get terribly damaged in less than a second.

 

If we wish to simulate these events, would we use the same time scales? Of course not! Then what about the time integration methods? Are there different time integration methods suited for each of the two events? What are the main differences between them? You will find answers to these questions in the lecture below.
