Evaluate Strain Results - Lesson 5

Are the strains developed in a body the same throughout its volume or do they differ from point to point? How can we measure the strain developed in a body?

Let's look at a bunch of nuts and bolts that are falling under gravity. When they hit a rigid surface a small amount of strain is developed at the point of impact. This strain becomes negligible as we move away from the point of impact.

Now let's look at a water balloon falling on the same surface. It deforms a lot more than the nuts and bolts and the entire volume of the balloon undergoes strains that are not negligible.

In this lesson, we will discuss how to calculate and interpret the strain results from structural analysis.
