Some flows show a dominant rotational component. Flow rotation is characterized using a parameter called vorticity, and such rotational flows are called vortical flows. They can be in the shape of rings referred to as vortex rings. These vortex rings can be artificially generated using vortex canons. Bubble rings are another example of vortex flows. Dolphins create these bubble rings underwater. These vortex rings form stable structures and show fascinating behavior in the vicinity of other such rings.
Sound knowledge of these vortex rings helps us understand the rotational component in a flow. In this lesson, we explore the elements of fluid rotation and learn about vortex rings.
