Transition on Flat Plate - Homework

Overview

Almost all fluid flows of practical interest are turbulent in nature. In most cases, these turbulent flows start off as laminar and undergo transition to turbulence. The type of transition depends on various factors such as the Reynolds number, surface roughness of the geometry, free stream turbulence levels, etc. For bounded flows when the fluid flow is constrained by solid walls, e. g., internal flows such as water flow through a pipe or air flow over a car/airplane, flow transition occurs when small disturbances get amplified. When simulating such fluid flows, it is important to account for the possibility of transition and use appropriate modeling techniques to accurately predict the onset of turbulence.

Objectives

In this example, you will simulate transitioning air flow over a flat plate. You will learn how to set up the problem using a transition-enabled turbulence model. You will also compare the simulation results with experimental data to validate the accuracy of the simulations.

Setup

Download the Mesh file required for setting up the simulation and associated Case & Data files from here. Follow the instructions below to set up this simulation in Ansys Fluent starting with the Mesh file. In case you face any issues setting up or running the simulation, refer to the corresponding initial and final Case and Data files.
