This workshop focuses on the usage of the Q3D solver inside Ansys HFSS™ high-frequency electromagnetic simulation software 3D Layout, introduced as a Beta feature from the 2025R1 release. The workflow is specifically intended to the application on conducted emissions issues on Power Electronics PCBs where parasitic parameters such as inductance (L), resistance (R) or capacitance (C), play an important role in determining the switching behavior of the system. The solver thus overcomes the intrinsic limitations of usage of S-parameters based solver issues for such type of applications, where to accurately fit impedance, a high memory usage or extremely high accuracy of S-parameters calculations was necessary.

Learning Outcomes:

Following completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Simulate and analyze PCBs for power electronics applications
  • Extract broadband SPICE models for power electronics PCBs to improve transient simulation accuracy.
  • Account for parasitic inductance (L) and capacitance (C) in simulations to overcome S-parameter modeling limitations.

Agenda

  • Setting a Q3D in 3DL simulation environment

This lesson focuses on how to set a proper simulation environment for Q3D in 3DLayout, including PCB import, setting up material, excitations, mesh settings and frequency sweep.

  • Phase Inverter PCB example

This lesson deals with some results of the application of the Q3D solver to the 3phase inverter PCB example.

  • Additional information

This lesson focuses on some important additional information about the workflow behind the PCB spice model construction, as well as some important information about usage of differential ports and correct LISN set-up if a CISPR25 conducted emissions environment is build up.

Prerequisites:

  • Familiarity with electromagnetic simulation tools available in Ansys Electronics Desktop (AEDT) platform is recommended.
This includes software such as Ansys HFSS™ 3D Layout software, Ansys Q3D Extractor® solver and Circuit.
  • Understanding of usage of S-parameters. Familiarity with spice models’ usage is also strongly recommended.

Please note: These training materials were developed and tested in the 2025R2 release.
