This tutorial presents a procedure to calibrate the Ansys Motor-CAD® dedicated electric motor design tool for multiphysics simulation induction machine equivalent circuit, using FEA analysis. The target application for this procedure is inverter-fed Induction machines, such as those used for traction applications.

Within the induction machine Lab module, Ansys Motor-CAD simulation uses a hybrid simulation approach, combining an analytic equivalent circuit model with 2D magneto-static FEA. This enables rapid calculation of efficiency maps and drive-cycles, over the full torque-speed envelope. This is particularly useful for induction machines, as full numerical modeling of their performance requires transient FEA. For an Induction Machine this necessitates numerous electrical cycles for the simulation to converge to a solution, meaning faster, hybrid solutions are advantageous at the early design stage.

Some components of the equivalent circuit use fixed values, calculated from analytical formulas. We can use static and transient FEA to calibrate these values and improve the accuracy of the equivalent circuit analysis, within the Lab module. This only needs to be performed once, for a given Induction machine design.
