This Application Best Practice (ABP) will explore the use of Ansys Fluent® fluid simulation software multi-objective, adjoint optimizer tool for optimizing (morphing) the wing shape to maintain lift while minimizing drag (the additional problem of maintaining zero pitching moment is not yet considered).

Learning Outcomes:

Following completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Explain the CRM aerodynamic optimization and the role of multi‑objective adjoint methods in Ansys Fluent software.
  • Configure the baseline CRM setup, including geometry, meshing strategy, solver settings, and observables required for adjoint optimization.
  • Apply Bounded and Equal Goals within the Ansys Fluent adjoint optimizer to achieve lift‑constrained drag reduction and compare performance across optimization strategies.
  • Evaluate optimization outcomes using metrics (drag, lift, lift‑to‑drag ratio), design iterations, and the effect of additional control points on morphing fidelity and computational cost.
  • Implement the remeshing workflow to generate refined meshes for optimized geometries and assess how remeshing impacts aerodynamic performance.

Prerequisites:

  • Basic knowledge of Ansys Fluent software, especially adjoint shape optimization
  • Ansys Fluent Getting Started: Basics
  • Ansys Fluent Gradient-Based Optimization

Please note: These training materials were developed and tested in the 2025R1 release.
