Course Description

This course covers both Multipaction and RF Discharge analysis using Ansys HFSS™ high-frequency electromagnetic simulation software. The multipaction part of this course explores multipaction in space borne communications systems and electron devices using the finite element method. This part of course consists of a lecture and five workshops with instructions and simulation files. The RF Discharge part of the course explores the ionization of gases due to high power RF signals in communications systems and electron devices using the finite element method. This part consists of a lecture and six workshops with instructions and simulation files.

The multipaction part of the course covers the basic concepts required for understanding the secondary electron emission (SEE) and subsequent breakdown in space borne communications systems and how to set up the analysis using Ansys HFSS. This part consists of one lecture file and 5 workshops covering the most used application areas. The list of workshops is as follows:

  • WS 1: Multipaction in RF Bandpass Filter
  • WS 2: Multipaction in Coaxial Cable
  • WS 3: Multipaction in Coaxial Cable to Microstrip Transition
  • WS 4: Multipaction in an Antenna System
  • WS 5: Multipaction in RF Cavity

The RF dishcarge part of the course covers the basic concepts required for understanding the ionization of gases in high power communications systems and how to set up the analysis using Ansys HFSS. This part consists of one lecture file and 6 workshops covering the most used application areas. The list of workshops is as follows:

  • WS 1: RF Discharge in Co-axial Bend
  • WS 2: RF Discharge in Waveguide Filter
  • WS 3: Electron Cyclotron Resonant (ECR) Plasma Discharge in an RF Cavity
  • WS 4: RF Discharge in a Parallel-Plate Waveguide
  • WS 5: RF Discharge in Multiplexer
  • WS 6: RF discharge in a Probe-fed Cylindrical Cavity

Prerequisites:

  • Completion of the HFSS Getting Started course or equivalent familiarity with the HFSS 3D Modeler, workflow, solver setup, and post-processing (plotting results graphs).
  • Familiarity with physics related to multipaction and RF discharge

Learning Outcomes:

Following completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Understand how Ansys HFSS simulates multipaction and RF discharge
  • Know how to set up multipaction and RF discharge simulations in HFSS.
  • Know how to plot multipaction and RF discharge simulation results in HFSS.

Please note: These training materials were developed and tested in the 2023R2 release.
