Stage / 6 month internship : Rendering / efficient light culling in Autonomous Vehicle Simulation (15197)

 Key Duties and Responsibilities

The goal of this internship is to be able to cull a point light where its intensity angle range does not impact the part of the scene seen by the camera.

Today our engine, based on Vulkan, can render large, scaled environments with a lot of geometries and lights. The different benchmarks made with our engine show that the lighting is critical for performance. The implemented cull-based method for lighting is not efficient enough. It does not cull every light illuminating the part of the scene inside the frustum of the camera. The method can be improved by culling the lights based on their intensity diagram, also called IES. First the internship will focus on a simple type of intensity diagram: the gaussian intensity diagram. Then if the new method is validated, the other types of IES will be covered.
