STL to SOLID body

      Hello everyone.
I have an STL model, it has a 1.5m mesh.
I want to convert it to a solid or shell, without the mesh.
When I load the STL model into SpaceClaim, I convert it to a solid. After a long process, I get a solid, but with 1.5m surfaces. This model weighs 2GB, making it impossible to work with. How do I remove the mesh? How do I smooth the surface? Or how do I get a shell without the mesh? Thank you.

Don't Convert or Shrinkwrap solve that problem? From long experience (and suffering) the best way to handle stl's is to remesh directly, skin (shrinkwrap) or use to build NURBs based shapes. My preferred solution now is to ask the Synopsys Simpleware team nicely if they'll do all that for me as Simpleware is designed to work with stl's.
