Spliting beams

Help with spltiing this generated beam , 

In this image, you can see 2 splits; one of them a previous student did it correctly , which iam trying to understand how did he do it 

The one on the left side I did it in Ansys Discovery; as you can see, splitting the generated beam causes many problems with sharing the object with the original beam. I used all types of splitting objects. But each time i split it, completly unshare it from the beam 

. Then sharing it back dont work as I hope. Could you help me work around this? i want to introduce damage to this beam the idea is want to crack this beam as in the right-side green line.  And run a random vibration simulation

Is your goal to to physically cut the beam in two with a gap between the ends?
