SubscriberHi everyone,
I have drawn a coil around an iron core in ANSYS Maxwell. Since I want to perform some simulations later, I will need to enter a value for the inductance under Excitations > Windings.
So my question is:
How can I determine the inductance of my coil model? It’s a regular coil wound around a ferromagnetic core. I just want to find out the inductance value so I can use it for the winding setup later. Thanks in advance for your help!

Ansys EmployeeHi,
Please notice that “for both solid and stranded windings, the inductance term can represent: the extra inductance for a portion of the winding of the winding which is not modeled (for instance, end-effects), the leads connecting the winding to the source, or the source inductance. (The main winding inductance itself is calculated directly by the solver.)”
This information is available in the Maxwell Help > Assigning Boundaries and Excitations for 3D Designs > Eddy Current T-Omega Boundaries and Excitations > Assigning a Winding Setup
The inductance calculation on a simple geometry can be found in the literature.
Another option is to use Winding / Current source, instead of voltage source
I hope it helps

If I understood you correctly, I should assign a winding to my coil in the model – I already did that (see image below).
In the winding setup, I currently selected the type “Voltage” (see image below). There is also a field for the inductance.
My questions:
So, if I use the “Voltage” type, I should not enter any value for inductance and leave it at 0, because it is already calculated internally?
If I change the type to “Current” , I have to enter a current value. But I don’t know the current, because I don’t know the inductance exactly. I could calculate the current only if I already knew the inductance.
I would like to run simulations with this coil – for example, to see how different core materials affect the inductance. I tried to calculate the inductance using basic formulas from the literature, but the results didn’t make sense for my model.
