Intro to Time Domain Analysis — Lesson 1

Time is an important variable in some engineering studies.

A classic example is the crash test of automobiles where the timing of air bag deployment is crucial to passenger's safety.

Drop testing of cell-phones and other electronics is also a time-varying scenario where the physics of impact is the key.

Even the development of acoustic systems requires a time-domain analysis as the medium of transfer changes over time.

In this lecture, we'll spend some time learning about the different factors that may result in time-dependent behavior in a system and discuss some recommendations on when to choose a time-domain analysis in studying a system's response.
