Deformation under Thermal Condition — Lesson 3

Engine blocks in cars are subjected to a severe thermal environment due to the combustion process occurring inside its chambers. Case cracking can be caused when a temperature difference occurs and the coefficients of thermal expansion vary for different parts, in the absence of adequate structural stiffness.

On the other hand, oil pumps in polar regions have to endure extremely low temperatures.

Once you start to observe, you will notice that many structures and products are expected to work under extreme thermal conditions. Let’s have a look at how structures deform under thermal conditions for different situations.

Lecture

In this lesson, we discuss thermal deformation under different conditions and how stress and elastic strain are generated.
