Ball sports such as soccer, American football, cricket and baseball rely heavily on the knowledge of how the ball and air interact with each other. Using computer simulations, you can accurately predict the physics of air flow around different types of ball configurations. This information can be critical when formulating game-winning strategies.
In this example, simulations are performed to compute the flow of air around an American football. You will learn how to setup 2D axisymmetric simulations for 1) viscous flow and 2) inviscid flow approximations (as a homework assignment), and compare and interpret the results of the two simulations.
