Simulation Examples

Several simulation examples are provided here. Each of them comes with a description file, video instruction, and Ansys simulation file. All of the simulations are conducted using Ansys Mechanical. Download the student version of Ansys software here.

(1) Electronics on a Shaker Table

When designing electronic equipment, it is important to consider possible vibration of the nearby environment. What could be a dangerous vibration frequency for the electronics in a closed cabinet? You are encouraged to run the simulation and find out.  Download the zip file and extract the contents. Go through the Readme file. Follow along with the provided How To Video file.

(2) Equipment vibrating due to misalignment

Accuracy is crucial in high-speed rotating equipment. A small misalignment or uneven mass distribution could result in a high reaction force to the connected equipment. Assuming there is an uneven distribution of mass, what would be the expected force vs. rotation speed relationship? Check out this simulation and find out.  Download the zip file and extract the contents. Go through the Readme file. Follow along with the provided How To Video file.

(3) Harmonic analysis of an automotive suspension assembly

Why is this car moving steadily on such a bumpy road? The credit goes to the design of the car's suspension assembly. Running a harmonic analysis on the car suspension assembly is the first step in understanding its behavior. Take a look at this simulation and find out how a harmonic analysis is done on this suspension assembly.  Download the zip file and extract the contents. Go through the Readme file. Follow along with the provided How To Video file.

(4) Washing machine

You might notice that your washing machine sometimes vibrates drastically. The uneven distribution of mass causes the machine to resonate at the rotating frequency. Modal analysis of the washing machine frame will show you these frequencies and mode shapes.  Download the zip file and extract the contents. Go through the Readme file. Follow along with the provided How To Video file.

Homework

Example of a beam under lateral excitation

Assume a piece of vibrating equipment sits in the middle of a simply supported concrete beam and is providing a cyclic force. Conduct a harmonic analysis and find out what frequency induces resonance in the beam. Alter the density and Young's modulus of the concrete and see how this critical frequency changes. You may refer to the readme and video file for more detailed instructions about the setup of the model.
