Wave propagation describes the way in which wave travels. This learning track introduces the basic principles behind electromagnetic wave propagation. We will begin with a discussion of Maxwell’s equations to describe the propagating electromagnetic wave. We will then discuss the theory of transmission lines and cover the basic characteristics of commonly used transmission lines and matching networks. Later, this learning track covers the multiport network analysis methods and scattering (S)- parameters.

Electromagnetic Wave Propagation
This course introduces the basic principles behind electromagnetic wave propagation. We will begin with a discussion of the most fundamental laws of electromagnetism – Maxwell’s equations. We will then use Maxwell’s equations to derive the wave equations for the e...Read more

Transmission Line Theory
This course provides an introduction to the theory of transmission lines. Characteristic impedance is defined and used to derive equations for signal reflection and transmission at an impedance discontinuity. Discussion also covers matching networks, input impedance and S...Read more

Basic Transmission Line Structures
This course provides an introduction to several basic and commonly used transmission lines. We will cover the basic characteristics of and design equations for coaxial cable, microstrip transmission line, parallel plate waveguide, and rectangular waveguides. In ...Read more

Matching Networks and Design Tools
This module provides an introduction to matching networks, which are used to maximize power transfer from a feed line to a load. In this context, we will also introduce the Smith chart, which is a graphical tool used to ease design and analysis of electromagnetic systems. We will go through the design of quarter-wave transformers, LC matching networks, and single-stub tuners.

Intro to Multiport Analysis
In this course we will introduce multiport network analysis methods. These are network characterization methods that describe a network purely through its externally observable behavior at a finite number of points where energy enters and exits the system, known as “po...Read more

Basics of S-parameters
In this course we will discuss scattering parameters, or S-parameters. This is a method of network characterization that describes what happens to an input wave that impinges on one of the ports. This input signal may be reflected at the port or it may be transmitted throug...Read more
