Boundary Conditions and Solving a Formula SAE Chassis Using Ansys Mechanical — Lesson 4

Torsional force is the most critical load transmitted through the chassis. Loads are induced by uneven surfaces or cornering forces. The chassis should be stiff enough to withstand all the static and dynamic loads experienced by the vehicle during racing conditions. So the torsional stiffness of the chassis needs to be tested properly to know how much the structure can resist twisting and cornering.

In part 1 of this lesson, you will learn how to apply loads and boundary conditions to chassis models and solve for stress and deformation. Torsion and cornering tests will also be carried out.

In part 2 of this lesson, you will learn how to apply loads and boundary conditions to chassis models and solve for stress and deformation. We will also analyze the effect of aerodynamic loads during cornering and perform a front impact test.
