The Newmark assumption uses the average acceleration [(a(t) + a(t+dt))\/2] in its calculation. Initial conditions and nonlinearities can cause the values at &#8220;t&#8221; and &#8220;t+dt&#8221; to oscillate (sometimes wildly).
