Why does a hyperelastic model converge with a 3-D representation, but always fails in 2-D with an element formulation error?

Assuming the mesh, loads and BCs are correctly defined, it is possible that the 2-D plane stress or plane strain assumption is invalid for the application, creating an overconstrained condition. This can be the case if it has a finite depth, is under a large compressive load and is a highly compressible foam material.
