The tensile crack softening model is fracture energy based damage model which can be used with many different types of failure initiation models to provide a gradual reduction in the ability of an element to carry tensile stress. Fracture Energy is the required input field in crack softening model. It can be calculated from the material Fracture Toughness, K, using the following Equation: K=sqrt(E x Gf) if the specimen is in plane stress state. K=sqrt(E x Gf)(1-v^2) if the specimen is in plane strain state where E is the material Young’s modulus, Gf is the material fracture energy, and v is the Poisson’s ratio.
