Also please advise on which CPU to get.

I am a chemical engineering student looking to buy a laptop that I can use to do simulations, mostly on ANSYS Fluent and/or CFX and ASPEN, from the convenience of my own home. Also my university has some pretty obsolete hardware, 8-year old hexa-core Xeon’s with the typical low clock speeds and slow RAM that older CPU’s were limited to.

For the two CPU options, I was looking at two options, the new Ryzen 7 4800h, a new 8c/16t CPU from AMD with decent clock speeds (4.2 GHz single core turbo and 3.8 all core), and the Core i7-10750h, a new 6c/12t Intel with serious clock speeds (5GHz single core and 4.3GHz all-core).

I read on a few fora that engineering software is mostly optimised for Intel systems due to their historic dominance in the market but I don’t want to base a $1300 decision on a random post on Tom’s Hardware Forums. ANSYS, ASPEN and AutoCAD are going to be the main software I will use and I am not sure whether this is true for them.

It’s worth pointing out that the ryzen 7 beats the intel at multicore workloads by over 50%, and has 70% delta’s in a few benchmarks. But i don’t think a video render benchmark is entirely relevant to engineering.

In case they’re relevant, the other specs I will go with are a Gefore RTX 2060 GPU (or 2070 if i find a decent sale), 16 or 32GB RAM (not sure whether I need the extra RAM for engineering, 16gb is overkill for my other needs anyway) and a 1TB m.2 NVMe SSD.

["post-45574","topic","type-topic","status-closed","hentry
[{"0":
17756
Anonymous
false
publish
null
normal
0
3070
253132
unanswered
publish
45574
27792
25","179017
2
1
119508
119508
2020-06-30 01:04:47
["GET
