


{"id":404199,"date":"2025-01-09T04:27:24","date_gmt":"2025-01-09T04:27:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/innovationspace.ansys.com\/forum\/forums\/topic\/mesh-convergence-problem-in-frictional-contact\/"},"modified":"2025-01-09T04:27:24","modified_gmt":"2025-01-09T04:27:24","slug":"mesh-convergence-problem-in-frictional-contact","status":"publish","type":"topic","link":"https:\/\/innovationspace.ansys.com\/forum\/forums\/topic\/mesh-convergence-problem-in-frictional-contact\/","title":{"rendered":"Mesh Convergence Problem in Frictional Contact"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&lt;p&gt;Hi, I tried to simulate the contact problem in a dovetail joint as illustrated below:&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/innovationspace.ansys.com\/forum\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/01\/09-01-2025-1736395455-Picture1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"237\" height=\"229\" \/>&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;I have a problem in mesh convergence test where the contact stress keeps increasing as the mesh gets finer.&nbsp;The global mesh size is 1 mm and mesh size along the contact edges is decreased from 0.32 mm to 0.02 mm, the stress results are summarized in the following table:&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;<em>Example of mesh:<\/em>&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/innovationspace.ansys.com\/forum\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/01\/09-01-2025-1736395531-Picture5.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/>&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;<em>Convergence history:<\/em>&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/innovationspace.ansys.com\/forum\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/01\/09-01-2025-1736395326-Picture4.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/>&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&nbsp;The maximum von Mises stress is always at the upper contact point where the fillet starts; for example, when the edge element size is 0.01mm, the stress distribution looks like:&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/innovationspace.ansys.com\/forum\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/01\/09-01-2025-1736395278-Picture3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"464\" height=\"467\" \/>&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;I also tried adaptive meshing by inserting a convergence in the stress output with 1% allowable change, but the results did not make sense:&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/innovationspace.ansys.com\/forum\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/01\/09-01-2025-1736396268-Picture6.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/innovationspace.ansys.com\/forum\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/01\/09-01-2025-1736396332-Picture7.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"794\" height=\"688\" \/>&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Please point out where I am doing wrong and how I can get converged results.&lt;\/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Information about this project: 2D plane stress analysis. Linear elastic material properties assumed (no plasticity). Frictional contact defined between two surfaces with a coefficient of 0.3.
