


{"id":247401,"date":"2023-01-25T01:06:16","date_gmt":"2023-01-25T01:06:16","guid":{"rendered":"\/forum\/forums\/topic\/local-mesh-refinement-with-targeted-edge-lengths-at-specified-areas\/"},"modified":"2023-01-25T01:06:16","modified_gmt":"2023-01-25T01:06:16","slug":"local-mesh-refinement-with-targeted-edge-lengths-at-specified-areas","status":"closed","type":"topic","link":"https:\/\/innovationspace.ansys.com\/forum\/forums\/topic\/local-mesh-refinement-with-targeted-edge-lengths-at-specified-areas\/","title":{"rendered":"Local mesh refinement with targeted edge lengths at specified areas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hello,<\/p>\n<p>I am working on a problem that features physics that are highly localized at the uppermost surface of my geometry.&nbsp; Accordingly, I am trying to implement a mesh that is very aggressively refined at the top area, shown below:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"manual mesh refinement at area\" src=\"\/forum\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/01\/25-01-2023-1674608104-mesh_100um_topface_manual.PNG\" alt=\"\" width=\"585\" height=\"440\"><\/p>\n<p>I got this result with three successive level 1 refinements at the top area, yielding an average edge length of 122 microns at the top face.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>My issue is that I&#8217;m seeking meshes of the above style, but with targeted edge lengths.&nbsp; I was looking for a mesh with 100 micron edges at the top face.&nbsp; Furthermore, I&#8217;m seeking to implement a convergence study with top-face edges having 10, 18, 32, 56, and 100 micron lengths.&nbsp; I am aware that the APDL meshtool allows me to set element lengths at areas, however, if I use this setting, it doesn&#8217;t refine aggressively enough.&nbsp; Below is what happens if I use the meshtool setting to target 100 micron element lengths at the top face:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"meshtool-implemented top face mesh refinement\" src=\"\/forum\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/01\/25-01-2023-1674608386-mesh_100um_topface_builtin.PNG\" alt=\"\" width=\"589\" height=\"443\"><\/p>\n<p>You can see how the meshtool implementation causes regions of high mesh density to cascade throughout the interior.&nbsp; This tendency causes the program to yield meshes with unbounded node counts as I try commanding top face elements with the 10 micron and 18 micron lengths.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>My question is if there is a way to implement the kind of aggressive mesh refinement I get by manually commanding level 1-5 refinements (say, with the arefine command), but with targeting a specified element length?&nbsp; My thanks for any help that can be provided!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"template":"","class_list":["post-247401","topic","type-topic","status-closed","hentry","topic-tag-ansys-mechanical-apdl","topic-tag-ansys-meshing","topic-tag-local-refinement-1"],"aioseo_notices":[],"acf":[],"custom_fields":[{"0":{"_bbp_subscription":["228855","99"],"_bbp_author_ip":["23.56.168.214"]," _bbp_last_reply_id":["0"]," _bbp_likes_count":["0"],"_btv_view_count":["1974"],"_bbp_topic_status":["unanswered"],"_bbp_status":["publish"],"_bbp_topic_id":["247401"],"_bbp_forum_id":["27790"],"_bbp_engagement":["99","228855"],"_bbp_voice_count":["2"],"_bbp_reply_count":["2"],"_bbp_last_reply_id":["247493"],"_bbp_last_active_id":["247493"],"_bbp_last_active_time":["2023-01-25 20:43:00"]},"test":"wood-863osu-edu"}],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/innovationspace.ansys.com\/forum\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/topics\/247401","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/innovationspace.ansys.com\/forum\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/topics"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/innovationspace.ansys.com\/forum\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/topic"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/innovationspace.ansys.com\/forum\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/topics\/247401\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/innovationspace.ansys.com\/forum\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=247401"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
